BLOG: Essential Mindshifts for Sustainability - by Rik Hoevers

This months Blog entry is from Rik Hoevers. He is a sustainability philosopher currently working on his first book 7 Essential Mindshifts for Sustainable Leadership. He writes in order to show us how we see our world and how we could change our minds to see more of what's possible. His writings touch our inner and outer realities and often create a palpable mindshift experience at the moment we are getting the point.

`Building Down` is the first essential sustainability mindshift

paradigms under construction
"paradigms under construction"

When considering the topic of sustainability, have you experienced a feeling of wondering where you could be most influential, where to direct your efforts so to be most effective? Although we often encounter situations needing our immediate attention there are also a practically endless number of smaller and bigger changes. Do we need to identify each and every one of them, turning them into action points, starting to draw attention to them, changing our collective behavioral patterns ever so slowly? Do we have the luxury of sufficient time to engage in this progress?

When looking at our myriad of unsustainable behaviors, patterns can be glimpsed that inform them, ways in which our thinking and perceiving moves, steering our values and behaviors both individually and culturally. We call these patterns our paradigms, they are as near to us as our skin, and yet often as unfamiliar as the dark side of the moon. By analyzing and assessing our paradigms, building alternatives as we increase our understanding, we can accelerate our growth towards sustainability tremendously.

The first essential mindshift is called "Building Down". It is the opposite of the current subconscious building paradigm “Building is a battle against gravity”.

We build by starting at ground level and dig a foundation, from there we work our way upwards. Our buildings conquer their height on the down-pulling force of gravity. This is recognizable in the tradition of raising a flag on the highest point of a building and also in the prestige associated with extremely high buildings.

But alas, what goes up must come down! If disaster strikes, buildings created with this paradigm naturally come down again. Our minds must be shifted to use a different, a "building down" paradigm.

What it is exactly and why it is so useful wil be explained in the next newsletter, along with the introduction of the second essential mindshift for sustainability. Rik will help us experience the implications of the first essential mindshift "Building Down" at the Opens external link in new windowExperience Integral Community Day on September 11 in Amsterdam for which all of you are invited.

Quote of the Season

Dandelion

by Wes Jackson, director of The Land Institute
- found in Biomimicry book by Janine M. Benyus

"How do we act on the fact that we are more ignorant than knowledgeable?
Embrace the arrangements that have shaken down in the long evolutionary process and try to mimic them, ever mindful that human cleverness must remain subordinate to nature's wisdom."
